Greetings Dancing Friends,

A few weeks ago, the hit dance television show 'Dancing With The Stars' performed a group hustle. They chose to to do it in a retro style from the 70's and portrayed it more like a line dance and some bad spin off from the Saturday Night Fever movie. Many people were upset and asked me to write a letter. I have been reading Ron Bess's newsletter 'DANCETALK' and there were many letters to the editor concerning the disapproval of their interpretation. If you did not see the show and would like to see it, please copy and paste the YOU TUBE link below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvIxrtSDco4

I decided to write a letter and asked Ron to post it on last week's newsletter. I asked people to go to my blog and post their comments. It seems that many of the dancers felt the same way but had difficulty posting their comments on my blog. The blog also posts to my Facebook notes and so far 11 people 'liked it' and 22 commented on it plus 2 more comments on the wall. I realize that not everyone is on Facebook but I ask that anyone that is and wants to add a comment, I can link my Facebook page on the DWTS forum on their website so they can read the letter and all of your comments. As they say, 'there is strength in numbers' so please join me in letting them know that our dance community desires them to have hustle dancing on their show but demonstrated with the same respect and realistic and positive way that they portray most of the other partner dances. Please copy and paste this link to post your comments.

Letter to Dancing With the Stars

To the Producers's of ABC's Dancing with the Stars:

I am a host of hustle parties in New York for over the last 8 1/2 years and the event director a national hustle dance event in NYC for the last 5 years called 'THE NEW YORK HUSTLE CONGRESS'.
This event involves competition dancing, workshops and performances in hustle and other forms of dancing. There are many other hustle event directors, teachers, competitors, performers and social dancers such as myself throughout the United States (including Puerto Rico) and in Europe. I am writing on our behalf because we are very proud of the dance Hustle and request that you do a better and more realistic interpretation than has been displayed on your show over the last few years.

FACT 1: Hustle dancing is one of the few pure authentic American dances, other than swing, Foxtrot and Peabody. It should be danced with the same respect the other dances are given on your show and not be made to look ridiculous

FACT 2: Hustle is not a dance that people stopped doing in the 80's. We actually have a combination of a young community and baby boomers that dance to current music as well as the classic music it was originally inspired by.

FACT 3: Hustle dancing is challenging, lyrical, rhythmical, beautiful, funky, dynamic and a sexy way for two partners to express themselves to music.

The people who dance hustle want you to know that. It was evident to us that you have no knowledge of what hustle really looks like. Your past demonstrations with the Professional dancers teaching the celebrities these hopping patterns were not even flattering to Pros and an embarrassment to the hustle community.

Recently you gave this big hype about airing a group hustle. Our community was ready for it. We keep waiting for you to represent our dance in the manner in which it deserves. Instead you gave the public a gross display of campy cheesy costumes and the dancers bouncing around in a manner that even a rabbit would be offended by. I used to work with Corky Ballas back in my days as a competitive ballroom dancer and was surprised in his choices to interpret the hustle in the group dance. It was without class and not an honest example of what hustle dancing has evolved to in 2009. The cliches your show used are so overdone and old that I am shocked that you could not come up with anything a little more fresh than what was presented.
Please check out YouTube to see what people who dance hustle are currently doing.

Our dance community wants to be heard. Thank you for listening and read the comments listed on this Facebook link

'Growth of Hustle' & Hustle on 'Dancing with the Stars'

Dear Dancing Friends,

Thank you for all of your wonderful comments and sugeestions so far. Here is the second take to have your voices heard.
I am still learning how to work my blog so your comments can go directly there so here is the second take on some very important topics.
I was invited in October by moderator Ron Bess to be on the panel of a forum titled "The Growth of Hustle" at the World Hustle Championships. Many interesting topics were brought up. The main concern was that not enough young people are interested in learning the dance. Many solutions were offered by a nationally diverse panel and attendees of the forum. The first of the reasons offered for this lack of interest was that not enough current music is being played by enough of the DJs at hustle dances and events. The second concern is how the national media on the two most popular dance television shows does not depict hustle dancing in an authentic way but rather in a campy cheesy way with dated costumes and theatrical lifts with bad transitions. There were other things brought up but I would like to address these first two issues at this time. Here are some things I can do:

MEET UP GROUP- It is not a new theory that every generation wants to express themselves to the music of their own times. Tybaldt Ulrich and I will be starting a meet up group in NY to go to clubs to dance hustle where current popular music is being played and therefore younger people will be in attendance. Our hope is to to get them turned on to hustle dancing to music that they are familiar with. Please let us know if you want to join us and we will be posting more info on this in the near future.

DISCOUNTS - I am not trying to encourage ageism but trying to encourage young people who will do not usually attend the parties. Therefore I would like to offer them a discounted admission price.

DISC JOCKEYS - I will encourage my DJs to play more current music that people can hustle to.

FORUM TO TELEVISION STUDIOS - I have been reading Ron Bess's newsletter 'DANCETALK' and have read your letters to the editor concerning your disgust of the portrayal of hustle dancing in the group hustle recently performed on ABC's 'Dancing with the Stars'. I have asked Ron to help me get those letters to the producers of the show. They should know how our community feels. I have written a letter and post it on my blogspot and I encourage you to click on the link for 'Comment' under my letter and post your thoughts and feelings so our voices can be expressed.
I will then post the link to the blog on ABC 'Dancing with the Star' forum page.

Thanks to all who attended this year's Haunted Hustle Party!

Your feedback is great and I am so glad you had a fun night. Next 2 dance parties will is at Club 412 for our 2nd & 3rd Sat dance with 3 rooms for dancing and 3 terrific DJs. Nov 14 & 21st. See you there!

FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER

Greetings Fellow Dancers!

It's love month again. This newsletter is dedicated to all who love music and dancing! This month I have 4 dance parties for you to share the love.

I have just returned from teaching on the Stardust Dance Cruise where I met a lot of nice people and now I am really motivated to get our dance cruise out of NY on the way. It's so wonderful to be on the sea! Who is ready to cruise?

Thank you to all who attended the our Sadie Hawkins Valentine's Party at Club 412 last Saturday. It was a great turnout and the music in all three rooms with DJ's, Johnny O, Jeff Stennett and Peter was fabulous!

*NEW STUFF*... I am very blessed to have 2 successful dances with YSBD at CLUB 412 every month that people love. I also enjoy having dance parties at clubs or restaurant as we did 'back in the day'. I can tell many of you enjoy this as well as I have had many requests to continue my dances at the beautiful and elegant IL CAMPANELLO. They will finish renovations this week and I will be able to get back to you shortly as to when the next dance party will be scheduled at this lovely place...stay tuned!

Here are two new nights per month to get out of the dance studios, get out of that tee shirt and have a night out on the town (or wear the tee shirt if you really want to!)

We started off this new year with a kickoff to my new parties called MILLENNIUM FRIDAYS!
First party was at BACKSTAGE Night Club in January. Even though the temperatures outside were in the single digits that night, Nelson Roman's music inside was hot, hot, hot. Everyone loved it and is looking forward to the next party at Backstage which is next Friday, Feb 20th (info below)

**BRAND NEW PARTY** MILLENNIUM FRIDAYS at IGUANA Restaurant and Night Club! (info below). Great Mexican Restaurant downstairs and we have the entire upstairs where the bar menu is served until 2am.

DJ's NELSON ROMAN & FRANKLIN AYALA playing sets of Hustle with latin sets from 9pm-2am for dancing on 2 wooden dance floors and a beautiful full size cash bar with 25 different kinds of margaritas and mojitos.

Yes, our country is in a recession, but can we still keep dancing??? The answer is "YES, WE CAN!" (Sorry, guys, could not resist going there). My new dances this month are recession priced at only, check it out...$10.

***These dance parties are the best deal for fighting the recession blues by meeting up with friends and making new ones with 4-5 hours of unadulterated dancing fun***

Yes, my friends, to answer your questions, we are still booked at the NY Hilton, Labor Day weekend for the 5th Annual New York Hustle Congress 2009.

Lastly, calling all animal lovers...I have dedicated 2009 to doing more to help animals that are abused, abandoned and in need. As part of doing this, I have joined and contributed to most of the major groups created to help animals. I recently received an email containing a horrific picture of 12 dogs that had been collected by the Animal Shelter in Buffalo that had been left outside to freeze to death. I called my friends crying feeling so helpless because I didn't know what I could do to help. Today I received an email from PETA asking to sponsor a Dog House for these poor animals to help prevent future suffering of this kind. I feel better knowing there is an organization that is taking steps to help. It is have copied the link below for PETA's new program and video called Angels for Animals- "Forgotten' for those of you who have a heart to take action as I do.
